GOMESA funds support coastal conservation and resilience projects in Gulf states.
The Department of the Interior announced the distribution of over $353.6 million in energy revenues from fiscal year 2023 to the four offshore Gulf of Mexico oil and gas producing states—Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas—as well as their coastal political subdivisions (CPS), counties, and parishes. Established by the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) of 2006, this revenue-sharing model allocates a portion of offshore oil and gas leasing revenue to these states, with a percentage also directed to the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).
The department stated, “The funds, disbursed annually based on offshore oil and gas production revenue, support coastal conservation and restoration projects, hurricane protection programs, onshore infrastructure projects, and activities to implement marine and coastal resilience management plans.“
More than $2 billion has been distributed under the GOMESA funding was instituted.
